All rivers are surrounded by a certain amount of land that is higher in altitude (upgradient) than the actual river. Rivers whose mouths are in saline tidal waters may form estuaries. If you start working in a lab on-campus early in your time at FSU (1st or 2nd year) there are potentially more opportunities available to you within that lab. Flooding, wind etc. can carry the topsoil away from farmlands, and make the soil unfertile. No plausible ‘dynamo’ hypothesis could account for even a weak magnetic field, let alone a strong one that could leave such residual magnetism in a billions-of-years time-frame.
