"Dream Girls and Mechanic Panic: Dystopia and Its Others in Brazil and Nineteen Eighty-Four." It contains so much of why I read SF - it has terrific characters, it's overflowing with ideas, it has marvellous set pieces and it engenders a sense of awe and wonder at the possibilities of our universe (or, rather, the multiverse).

World Of Phlebotinum: The universe is full of Applied Phlebotinum with more to be found behind every star, but the Phlebotinum is dealt with in a fairly consistent fashion despite its lack of correspondence with reality and, in-world, is considered to lie within the realm of scientific inquiry. It's got everything - essentially it's about Imperialism and Rhetoric, but it has many lessons and much wisdom for those interested in learning about Imperialism, especially the modern-day form of 'Aid' and 'helping the natives' - but then justifications for Imperialism have usually been wrapped up in fluffy-feel-good 'humanitarian' terms A good SF novel should be, above all things, a good novel.

Harris and the robot developed an unexpected comedic relationship in which the robot, voiced by Bob May, plays the “straight man,” allowing Harris to deliver some of his most memorable zingers. Just humans being their usual dysfunctional, looking out for number one, self. Even so far as to commit a random celebratory execution of one of his staff (I’ve seen it, I’m not lying.) Why his constantly abused underlings don’t commit mutiny is beyond me., Mush , Professionals using non-professional terms: like a psychologist using the word “crazy” to describe a patient, or a botanist using the phrase “gangly shrub.” It’s almost as if the world in which these characters live in was created by someone who never bothered to do any research on behalf of his characters.

Haldeman's Conch Republic and Novysibirsk were all the more convincing for not being subjects of polemic. The Death Gate Cycle is a seven-book series from the authors and creators of Dragonlance. We've known all along that we're destroying ourselves and our planet, and that we have the resources to stop this madness, as this novel deftly demonstrates. Sufficient postage for reply and/or return. Read this, and it's sequels, 20 years ago. Both alien races believe this proves the existence of God: i.e. he's obviously been playing with the evolution of life on each of these planets.
